Copycat, Part 1

Hello. I'm Peter Laverock. And I'm Elizabeth Lickiss. Welcome to Spotlight. This programme uses a special English method of broadcasting. It is easier for people to understand, no matter where in the world they live.

The young cat plays with a ball. There is nothing strange in her behaviour. But a group of experts are very interested in what she is doing. The young cat looks normal. But the way she was created was very unusual. The young cat is called 'CC' or Copycat. The young cat is a clone.

Cc is a copy of her parent. She does not have a father and mother. Scientists took a cell from a female adult cat. This cell contained genetic information - or DNA. DNA is the body's map of how a creature should look and develop. The scientists then joined this cell with an empty egg cell. They then treated the egg cell to encourage it to divide and grow. Finally they placed the egg into another cat to develop like a normal pregnancy. After many attempts, Cc was born. She is an exact genetic copy of her parent. Scientists had created a clone.

There have been several examples of animal cloning since Dolly the sheep. Dolly was famous because she was the first example of cloning of an adult warm-blooded animal. That was in nineteen-ninety six.
