Le clausole sono parti di una frase. In inglese esistono due tipi di clausole: indipendenti e dipendenti.
Clausola indipendente
Le clausole indipendenti contengono un soggetto e un verbo e quindi sono frasi complete. Un altro termine per definire una clausola indipendente è "clausola principale".
We left the house at 5 a.m.
Hamed eats an apple every day.

Clausola dipendente
Le clausole dipendenti non sono frasi complete e richiedono una clausola indipendente per avere senso. Se si elimina la clausola dipendente da una frase, il messaggio che l'oratore intende trasmettere non viene espresso.
The car, which was brand new, needed a new wing mirror.
You went with her to the dentist, didn't you?
If you leave now, you'll miss the main event.
Clausola relativa
Le clausole relative sono clausole dipendenti che modificano i sostantivi. Queste clausole iniziano con i pronomi relativi "who", "whose", "which", "where", "when" o "that".
The car that I drove here in is actually my mother's.
His friend, who was wearing a bright red coat, only stayed for half an hour.
Gerald’s new job, which is at LingQ, has made him very happy.
Restrittiva o non restrittiva?
Le clausole relative possono essere restrittive o non restrittive.
Le clausole restrittive sono essenziali per una frase. Modificano il sostantivo o la frase sostantiva e se vengono eliminate, la frase non avrà senso o il messaggio che l'oratore sta cercando di trasmettere andrà perso.
Esempi:
The muffins that I baked are all low sugar.
The hotel where Angela works will close down in a month.
The person who made us all late should have to clean the bus.
