Determiners

I determinanti precedono i sostantivi o le frasi sostantivate e indicano se il sostantivo è specifico o generale.

Articoli determinativi e indeterminativi

Gli articoli funzionano come gli aggettivi in una frase. In inglese esistono tre articoli: "a", "an" e "the". "A" e "an" sono noti come articoli indeterminativi e "the" è noto come articolo determinativo.

Articolo determinativo

L'articolo determinativo "the" viene utilizzato quando l'argomento è unico, specifico o è già stato menzionato in precedenza.

Utilizziamo l'articolo determinativo anche nelle seguenti situazioni:

• Prima di strutture famose

• Prima dei nomi di famiglia

• Prima dei paesi che includono le parole "republic", "kingdom" o "states" nei loro nomi

• Prima dei paesi che hanno nomi plurali

• Prima di decenni

• Prima delle aree geografiche

• Prima dei superlativi e dei numeri ordinali

Esempi:

People love to take pictures in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The Andersons are coming over for dinner on the weekend.

The United Kingdom is in Europe.

Will you be visiting the Netherlands this time?

I wish I had been alive in the '60s.

The Amazon River is the widest river in the world.

This is the best movie I have ever seen.

Gli articoli indeterminativi

Gli articoli indeterminativi "a" e "an" si usano per parlare di cose che si vedono per la prima volta e di particolari membri di una classe o di un gruppo. Usa "a" quando la parola che viene dopo inizia con una consonante e "an" quando inizia con una vocale.

Utilizziamo gli articoli indeterminativi anche nelle seguenti situazioni:

• È presente uno di qualcosa

• Nomi di lavoro

• Nazionalità

• Religioni

• Un esempio di qualcosa

• Dopo "what" e "such"

Esempi:

There is a rat in the basement!

A police officer knocked at my door last night.

She married a Japanese man and moved to Japan.

He goes to synagogue because he is a Jew.

My mother has a large collection of vintage postcards.

What a lovely day!

Dimostrativi

I dimostrativi in inglese sono "this", "that", "these", "those". Mostrano, o dimostrano, dove si trovano le cose in relazione al parlante.

This sweater is so itchy.

Are you going to eat this muffin?

I will need these boots when I go hiking tomorrow.

That building is so tall I can't see where it ends.

Will we also be offered those snacks?

Those cherry trees are starting to blossom.

Quantificatori

I quantificatori sono parole o frasi utilizzate prima di un sostantivo per indicare quanto o quanti.

There are very few spoons left in the cutlery drawer.

Distributivi

I distributivi mostrano come qualcosa viene distribuito, diviso o condiviso. Comprendono "all", "both", "each", "every", "either" e "neither".

All of the students in the class passed the exam.

They would both like a copy of the program.

Each child in the dance class will get new tap shoes.

I have liked every chocolate I have tried so far.

I would like either the red or the blue car.

Neither the brown nor the white dog went for a swim.
