Learner of the Month, August 2005

This month's Learner of the Month is from the country of Taiwan. Tony Chiang, a long time member of The Linguist, resides in Taipei, Taiwan where he is a university graduate student majoring in sociology. Tony told us that he has been learning English for at least ten years, but before the Linguist, he couldn't comfortably or accurately express himself. He tried to learn English using many different methods but none of them seemed to give him the results he was hoping for. He then came across Steve Kaufmann's book, The Linguist: A personal guide to language learning, and after reading the book, he decided to become a member of the Linguist. Tony was selected as the Linguist Learner of the Month because of his strong commitment to improving his English skills. He consistently takes advantage of all our services and has made a lot of progress since he first joined the Linguist one year ago.

Tony enjoys the Linguist for many reasons but his favorite aspect of the system is the personal tutoring. He explains "all tutors at the Linguist are not only my good mentors, but also my familiar friends." He enjoys receiving regular progress reports that offer him advice and encouraging words. Tony finds it helpful to receive feedback from his tutor and it motivates him to put a lot of effort into his English learning.

Tony Continues: First of all, the Linguist system is flexible. I can arrange my time to learn English as long as I have a computer and the Internet.

Secondly, the writing correction system is the unique part at the Linguist. Through writing submissions, not only have I improved my writing skills, but I have also shared my thoughts with my tutor.

As for me, I don't think that I am studying English, but playing English. Studying English has become an enjoyable game for me at the present time. No one forces me to do these kinds of English learning activities. I just want to do these English studying activities subliminally when I have free time. Learning English at the Linguist has become a part of my life naturally. I can't image that I could bear to stop learning English for even a little while. All in all, everything related to English has become more and more interesting since I have joined the Linguist.
