Learner of the Month, October 2006

I'm happy to announce that this month the title of Linguist Learner of the Month has been awarded to Sumiko Kumasaki. She is 40 years old and works for a pharmaceutical company. She lives near Kobe, Japan with her husband and four year old daughter.

Sumiko has been a member of The Linguist for almost ten months. She is very active on the site and regularly submits writing and participates in discussions. She is also an active 'blogger' and really enjoys being part of the Vox community. She enjoys learning about The Linguist tutors and other Linguist members and has fun keeping her own diary. If anyone would like to take a look at Sumiko's blog, please visit http://giverin.vox.com/. Sumiko started learning English in junior high school, when she was 13 years old. She remembers reading and translating sentences that were given to her and memorizing words. However, with The Linguist, she can now choose what she would like to study. Sumiko says, "The Linguist system relies on the learner's own initiative, unlike other English language schools. With The Linguist, we can choose content from the Library that contains natural conversation or practical English." Sumiko understands that repetitive listening is very important and now that she can choose what she wants to study, she enjoys listening very much. She was also impressed by the fact that The Linguist is an integrated system that combines reading, listening, writing, speaking, and reviewing. It doesn't just focus on grammar or on speaking. Sumiko said that she really appreciates all the tutors and learners who encourage and motivate her. The Linguist has changed her life and way of thinking.
