The Travel Business, Part 4

Steve: Now, "Identity Theft Insurance," that sounds like a very modern kind of insurance. Could you elaborate a little bit on how that works?

Colin: Well, there is a problem these days with people getting a hold of your personal information, and with that personal information, ordering credit cards, buying cars, doing a whole bunch of things that can impact your credit rating and your ability to get a car loan and whatnot. So what Identity Theft Insurance does is it protects you and will give you assistance, both with our expertise as well as with financial assistance, to rectify the situation if you ever are affected by identity theft, because it takes a while to contact everyone that needs to get contacted, set them straight, let them know what's right and what's wrong, clean up your credit bureau. All that takes time and money, and can be very expensive, and we'll help you through all that. Steve: Yeah, I can see that being very useful. Another question: Medical insurance-of course, here in Canada, the whole subject of medical insurance and our national health system is always in the news, and I think a lot of people feel that having paid taxes for thirty, forty years as they approach old age when they're more likely to need health care, that they're going to be in a great, long lineup of people all trying to access that health care, which seems to be having trouble keeping up. So then, does your policy then provide sort of additional security of access to health care, or just what is the nature of your insurance policy?

Colin: We have a very specialized niche of medical insurance. It's not Blue Cross; it's not extra coverage. What it is, is it's travel medical insurance. What many people don't realize is that once they leave British Columbia, there's significant restrictions on their medical coverage from the B.C. government. So what our travel medical insurance does is it gives you that extra coverage when you're traveling out of province or to the rest of the world, to ensure that if you get sick overseas, that you'll be fully covered, that you'll get access to the right medical people, that you'll get assistance and financial assistance, and maybe even have to fly you home or even fly members to visit you at your location overseas if you can't be moved. Those type of things aren't normally covered by provincial medical coverage, and that's what we do. Steve: I know that is a big issue. I've had the experience, more in terms of visitors from overseas who were here with me and got sick, and of course it's very, very expensive if you have to pay for it yourself. I've also had my wife's mother travel into the States and get sick. But one of the issues that always comes up is if the person traveling is an older parent or relative, how difficult is it to get coverage for someone who might be eighty?

Colin: It's not difficult, it just could be expensive. The price of travel medical insurance depends on a number of factors; one being your age, one being your medical condition, another being how many medications you take. So depending on those factors, there'll be a different price that you get quoted, plus you can buy medical insurance for a three-day trip, a five-day trip, or even a whole year's worth. It's up to you, what trip you're going on, and how much you can afford.
