Regions of Britain, Yorkshire

Yorkshire

Yorkshire is a historic region of northern England and the largest county in the United Kingdom. Yorkshire is a well-known region of Britain with its own cultural identity. It is famed for its distinct cuisine and fabulous natural landscapes.

Yorkshire has sometimes been nicknamed ‘God's own county' thanks to its vast stretches of untouched countryside, stunning peaks, lush valleys, gentle rolling hills and a stretch of spectacular coastline. Yorkshire also contains many of England's most famous towns and cities, including the major cities of Leeds and York. Yorkshire is also home to Harrogate - a bustling town that offers fabulous shopping alongside the magnificent heritage and architecture.

The people of Yorkshire are immensely proud of their county and local culture and it is sometimes suggested they identify more strongly with their own county than they do with their country. Yorkshire people have their own distinctive dialect known as Tyke. The most famous local speciality is the Yorkshire Pudding, served with roasted potatoes and meat. This is often served with local Yorkshire ales. In recent years curries have become popular in the county largely due to the immigration and successful integration of Asian families. There are many famous curry empires with their origins in Yorkshire including the 850-seater Aakash restaurant in Cleckheaton, which has been described as "the world's largest curry house". I would thoroughly recommend a trip to Yorkshire next time you are in England.
