Learner of the Month, June 2007

Kulisara Boonrawd is a 30-year old Thai lady who is currently living in Nairobi, Kenya where her husband is working as a diplomat. She is a housewife at the moment but she would like to earn a diploma in Business Administration so she will be able to run her own business when she returns to Thailand. Being able to speak English fluently will be an important asset when she starts her own business.

Kulisara learned English for 3 years at primary school in Thailand. She also learned Norwegian and English for four years in Norway, where she attended high school. Most recently, she took a 3-month English course through the United Nations. However, she is still not fluent. Kulisara says she did not learn English well in Thailand because most of the English teachers were not able to speak English very well and the students only learned grammar rules without knowing how to interact with other people.

Kulisara finds The Linguist very effective for many reasons. First, she thinks that listening to and imitating native speakers is a much more natural way to learn a language than worrying about complicated grammar rules. Second, she believes it is a very cost effective and convenient way to learn. Finally, Kulisara really likes the tutors. She says, "All the teachers are like friends. Sometimes I am able to share some personal problems with them." Kulisara continues: The Linguist has helped me express myself better. I can speak and write more fluently. I can also read faster and I understand better when I listen to English speakers. I enjoy The Linguist system because I have no pressure when I speak or write. Nobody laughs at me even when I make mistakes. Also, I have made many connections with people around the world.

Kulisara is not the only one who has noticed her improvement. Her colleagues and her husband think that her English is much better than it used to be, particularly her pronunciation and writing.

It comes as no surprise to me that Kulisara has improved so much. She has submitted almost 3000 words of writing in the past three months and has also spent a lot of time on all the other Linguist activities. She is a very motivated and hardworking learner!
