Steve's Corner, February, 2005

We will soon change our membership levels to reflect the need for language learning to be as integrated as possible. The Linguist manages to integrate reading, listening, vocabulary learning, writing and speaking. That is what makes our system so effective. Under the new membership levels, all Linguist members will have access to the full range of services of our program, including personal tutoring.

I intend to spend more time personally working with our learners and will be running online seminars on English learning. I will announce the times for these seminars soon and hope that many of you will be able to attend.

At these seminars I will discuss learning strategies and how best to use The Linguist system to make a breakthrough. I will especially focus attention on vocabulary learning strategies.

I will discuss how to ensure that you completely master the most frequent 2000 words of the language. You need to not only recognize them, but also to be able to use them accurately since they account for over 80% and up to 95% of language content that you will hear and read. We will show you how pronunciation practice can effectively help you learn these important words. Most mistakes in writing, even by relatively advanced learners, involve the inappropriate use of these very common words.

At the same time I will show you strategies that help you to learn the thousands of less common words that are important to you if you want to work or study in English. We will discuss how to select content for study so that you can learn and remember these less common words. I will explain techniques to use in our REVIEW section to effectively study these words.

I will also show how writing and speaking regularly will allow you to get the necessary practice and feedback so that your learning activities will bring about new confidence in your ability to communicate in English. I look forward to getting together with you.

If you have any special times of the day and of the week that are good for you, please send me an email and let me know.
