The Travel Business, Part 2

Part 2

Colin: We have a program called "Show Your Card and Save," and anyone who's got one of our BCAA cards, if they go to one of our savings partners, such as Cloverdale Paints, or Husky Mohawk gasoline, or Bell Canada, and show the card, they'll receive discounts for what they purchased. Most hotel chains, lodging chains also have discounts for AAA and CAA members, so there's actually 66,000 locations in North America where you can get instant savings just for showing your BCAA card. Steve: That sounds pretty attractive. So the main service still, though, is the roadside service, but could you describe perhaps some of the other areas, perhaps a little more detail, that the BCAA has expanded into?

Colin: Sure. What many people don't realize is BCAA is also one of the largest travel agencies in B.C., as well as one of the largest insurance agencies in B.C. On the travel side, we grew up offering travel assistance to people traveling by car, of course, and that's expanded to a full-size travel agency where we help people with air bookings, cruises, tours. Anywhere they want to travel in the world, we've got agents that will help them do that. On the insurance side, we offer everything from medical insurance to auto plan, to home insurance and life insurance. We're very big in that department. Steve: Now, I know those are all quite competitive sectors. I hear from my friends who are in the travel business that margins are being whittled away, tours are cheaper than ever, a lot of people are booking directly on the internet. How does one stay competitive in the travel business?

Colin: Travel business is very tough, and we're finding that as well. Our advantage is that our members really trust BCAA for the best advice. That's what we're known for, is you come to BCAA, we're going to help make sure you get the best vacation ever, and we're known for having some of the best travel advice around, especially if you're traveling by car. We have a number of free services available to members. We give you maps for free, we give you directions, we'll even plot your route on a map and show you where you can stay along the way, help you with those bookings. So if you're traveling by car, we have a lot of value-adds for you.
