Shopping for Jeep Tires

Male 1: Hi. How are you doing?

Male 2: Not too bad.

Male 1: Do you work here?

Male 2: Yep.

Male 1: Hey, I'm looking for some Jeep tires. Do you guys carry; I've seen some big tires over here. Male 2: Yeah, we've got all sorts. What kind of Jeep is it?

Male 1: YJ with the current tires are I guess 225/75, does that sound?

Male 2: Yeah that sounds great. I'd probably recommend getting into a 235/75 because it's a more common size. You can have a lot more options available and just, it looks cosmetically better.

Male 1: Those are a little bit bigger?

Male 2: Yeah, maybe just a tiny bit bigger. Maybe that much bigger overall and just, it looks nicer underneath the Jeep.

Male 1: Do you guys carry any used tires or do you all just sell new?

Male 2: We carry used and new. I don't know if I'm going to have much in the way of used in that size. Just trying to think now. Let me have a look.

Male 1: They don't have to be used. I'm just curious, if you happen to have some good used tires then. Male 2: I don't think I do. Sometimes, you know you fluke out.

Male 1: Are these, ok, these would work. Jeep tires?

Male 2: Yeah.

Male 1: I don't need snow tires, probably in Vancouver but. Male 2: Yeah, we don't have anything. Maybe we've got the odd one here and there but nothing in a full set. Male 1: Oh so the ones that say Inspector Charlie are trade ins. Ok.

They are the used tires. Ok.

Male 2: Let me just show you one that I like. What are you doing with the Jeep?

Male 1: Not a lot of off-roading at all, anymore. I was younger.

Male 2: One is the Big O tire and it's called the Big Foot Dual Groove. This one here, let me pull it down. This one is probably going to be better for your application. You've got two huge water channels down the center; they are called aqua channels simply to stop it from hydroplaning. Male 1: So it flushes the water out. I think I've seen that in a commercial before. Male 2: Yeah, it's like the Goodyear Aqua Tread. The same design, actually made by the same company. Then it's got lots of open shoulder sipes so whatever this doesn't get rid of the rest of it flushes out the sides. Lot's of sipes in the tread blocks; they act like little fingernails in the wet stuff and grabs on to the pavement. It comes with a free lifetime guarantee. Basically what happens is this, if you do anything to this tire, like let's say you are camping and your friend swings an ax near the tire or something weird happens to it, it doesn't matter what, if it's not repairable it's replaced free. You just sign a piece of paper and you're off with a new tire. There's no pro-rated anything, no charges of any kind. Free flats, free rotations, free rebalancing, basically it's like a no maintenance, no hassle tire. Male 1: Ok, I've never bought new tires. What sort of price, what's the range on these? Male 2: This one here I believe is $135 but I'll have to double check that. It's either $135 or $139 each. This one, all Big O brand tires come, that's installed and balanced with new rubber valve stems. There is no extra charges, just an environmental levy of $3 a tire, it's a government charge. Male 1: Why, of course there will be.

Male 2: Yeah, they've got to get their hands in your pockets. Then there's basically, from there we go into a more aggressive tire like, where is it now? Male 1: You mean more of an off-road, dirt?

Male 2: Yeah, it's more of a chunkier tread. There it is. I ran this on my truck for a long time and I find them really nice but I do a little bit more off-roading. You can see it has a more aggressive tread design to it. Lots of siping all over the place, criss cross sipes all over. It stands up really good in the like, off-road conditions like gravel road driving, mud.

Male 1: It looks like a real off-road type tire.

Male 2: Believe it not it's not noisy. Sometimes when you look at a tire like that you think holy cow. It's going to hum when I go down the road. Male 1: It's probably a little harder on gas I would imagine. Male 2: No. same rolling . really. I mean that one you are going to find is a little bit smoother riding and a little softer. This one here is more of a harder stiffer ride.

Male 1: Basically I think you are telling me to figure out, figure out what exactly I want the tire for.

Male 2: This one here, they both work out very similar in price because this one here is like $128 or something like that but with this one we add valves and balancing so that brings it up probably a few bucks more expensive than the Big O brand tire.

Male 1: So a lot more or.

Male 2: No. Probably talking maybe $30.

Male 1: Oh $30 a tire.

Male 2: No not a tire, for the whole set of four.

Male 1: What I should probably do is figure that out. I'm just up the street so. Male 2: Ok.

Basically that one comes with a killer warranty. This one has a warranty but it's prorated so basically you pay for what you've used of the tire if something happens to it. Male 1: Oh I see. You use half the tire life, you get half the tire life.

Male 2: Yeah.

Then eventually the warranty doesn't really do you any good because once you are about a little over half worn we could sell you a tire for cheaper than it would be under warranty. Male 1: All right. Let me figure that one out and like I said I'm just at Ambleside, so I'll pop back in. Male 2: We've got cheaper alternatives too like if it's something that you didn't want to spend a lot of money on we could get you into a tire sort of like this or we've got several other choices for a little over $100 a piece. Male 1: Well tires, I kind of thing, it's something you might as well get something good. Male 2: Yeah.

It's all you're riding on. Male 1: I mean you know, that's your, one of your safety devices. Male 2: If you are going to keep it for a while it's a good idea to put some good tires on it. If you're going to get rid of it in a year then you can get away with something a little cheaper. Male 1: I got ya. All right. Well I'll pop back in then and maybe I'll bring the Jeep in and we'll make that decision. Male 2: Ok.

Male 1: Thanks a lot.

Male 2: You're welcome. Have a good one.

Male 1: You too.
