Fresh Starts by Kindrey Doyle

I've decided that I like the month of January a lot. The Christmas rush is over, the weather is decidedly cold, and it just naturally feels like a good time of year to make a fresh start. I'll probably say the same thing come March, but there's definitely a feeling of optimism that comes with the ringing in of a New Year on both personal and global levels. Personally, I don't believe in making New Year's resolutions, probably because I know I never keep them. But that doesn't mean I don't have some "resolution" type things swimming around in my head. They're the things I always have on my mind, eat better, exercise more, have fun with my kids, be generous with others, nothing ground-breaking or specific to the "New Year", but I guess the beginning of January makes one think about these things a little more earnestly- at least for a few weeks anyway. I find the cold weather refreshing as well. It's supposed to snow in Vancouver this weekend which is exciting. We usually get one or two snowfalls per year, but it normally changes to rain within a few days and the snow is washed away again. But while the snow is here, it creates havoc in the streets and fun on the playground! I grew up in a very cold and snowy climate on the Canadian Prairies and I can't help but think my kids are missing out on lots of snowy activities here on the West Coast. There's nothing better than getting bundled up and spending the afternoon in the backyard building a snow fort or taking your toboggan to the local park for a ride. So when the snow hits, we'll be ready to take full advantage. I hope there's so much snow that school gets closed early on Friday. Now that will be fun!

Until next month, Happy New Year.
